Joey, Albert’s farm horse, is sold to the British Army at the outbreak of the First World War. He is trained to become a cavalry charger and is shipped to France for battle, where he is eventually captured by German soldiers.
Throughout all this, Albert never gives up hope of finding Joey and is finally reunited with him. But this is not the end of the story for Joey and Albert. While Joey was working for the Germans, he bonded with a French girl called Emilie, and Emilie’s grandfather buys Joey, outbidding Albert, to save him from being killed for his meat at the end of the war. Has Albert lost Joey for good?
