Poppy Crocheted Brooch
For many the poppy symbolises the great losses suffered during the First World War.
The scarlet corn poppy was a common flower on the Western Front, as it was one of the few plants to grow on the battlefields. The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol for the fallen originates from the poem In Flanders Field by John McCrae in 1915. The legacy of that conflict is still with us today and the poppy has come to represent those who have been lost in subsequent conflict.
This poppy brooch is made by the Zoe Project which provides training and fairly paid work for women living in some of the poorest shanty towns of Lima, Peru.
