Chas and his gang collect ‘war souvenirs’, bits from damaged planes and bombs. And then, they find a machine gun in the wreckage of a German plane; this is the best souvenir of all, but it must be kept secret from the adults and a rival gang. The children set up their own secret fortress to defend their town against German air raids, but when a gunner from a crashed German plane discovers the fortress, they take him prisoner and, later, try to help him to escape. The adult world has crashed into the middle of their lives, but where will it all end?
